Yashmakerie and Buccaneering
Deserts the colour of octogenerian faces,
mountain passes full of silence and violence.
Dynasties of builder-kings plotting palaces,
heroes (as celebrities of yore were called) whose giant strides
survey the stretching plains and keep a shrewd eye on
those epic poets who seem likely to survive.
A pot-pourri of porpoises parrots mahogany
orchids olives grapes crocodiles elephants and camels.
Greek ports - scarcely busier than disused canals -
where lethargic waters barely bother to lap,
local characters who sometimes at first amuse
but - pursuing and importuning - in the end annoy.
The nuts and bones and cumbersome cudgels
of villagers’ ceremonial customs and costumes,
illegible glances behind yashmaks and grilles
guarded by killer kinsfolk and fierce moustaches.
The onset of fever or sloth or signs of belonging -
Remember
the art of travelling is never to stop.
