Chairs
After the chase
he sat on a fallen tree
with a handy branch for his back.
At home, they’d use
two logs he wedged together
made soft with a deerhide.
Sitting by the fire
hours, years, centuries,
from the first spark he’d made
emerged Adam’s elegance,
form that followed fashion,
seats for every purpose:
speaking, working, musing, lounging.
Birthing. Dying.
That almost forgotten spark
that fired and let invention
make night into day.
Could it be used to kill?
Current that was tamed
would it work the cut-off quicker,
cleaner, completer
than rope or guillotine?
In fact, in all ways grimmer
Old Sparky awaits the sitter ....
