Footfall
The Tanzanian site is backfilled now
by the archaeologists’ spade,
their findings left for groping roots.
Two upright hominids,
millennia ago, left their footprints here
in a soft drift of volcanic ash,
so close, we know their flanks might touch,
his arm enfold her shoulder
in the growing dark.
His stride direct;
her smaller prints skewed at last,
as she had turned, perhaps in doubt.
And early
this March morning, our hands held tight,
we turn and watch the grey slick of our footfall
disappearing
under the crisp spring
of the new turf.
