brows, a commotion of aprons.
one rolling-pin held like a cornet
in a photograph, a peevish
clatter of heels on the parlour
tiles, three children under seven
clamouring for the attention their
parents reserve, heatedly, for one
another, the au pair sulking in
Portuguese, and grandfather biting
the stem of his pipe resolutely,
eyes closed, hoping she’ll return
from Alsace-Lorraine to the pigeon-
loft on time, still plucky, without gunshot.
