Liverpool
which is of course just an amalgam
of all its badness as a parallel
for the stirred shit in my life
the long straight top-road I veered from
down to an estate of tall dark concrete block
barred-up grey buildings and screaming
the dock road going down-hill passing
under a neon flyover looming with pillars
posters for the jocks and in the fold a needle left
the sea itself with oil-worn timbers
nodding agreement to the turning of backs
on this petrol’d black tide
the fairy-lit hotel with its curtain-wall
reflecting only exclusion from the brighter place
a separation from the guttered way below
the porno-shop around the corner from when
I had the guts to turn and run and say
no in the face of blazon failure
which is all a way of describing this metal
as a poor alloy and flawed
too diry for a clean casting
