When they built the M69 he felt as if he’d gone up in the world,
HIS city now had TWO Motorways
(as well as a Cathedral, First Division footie,
express trains to London St Pancras and a cattle market
(he felt the last to be especially important,
the cattle market, for only a real county-town city
(and there weren’t many of those) had a cattle market)),
he could go to Coventry without
the drag of Narborough, Sharnford, Shilton and Ansty,
slow on the A46, sad villages who
no longer had a trunk route with Fodens, just
the downgraded to B Four double One Four, minor road, how
they’d never know the roar again of Scammell.
He’d ride it on Sunday, in his Allegro
legal at seventy just for the thrill
of belonging to a city with two motorways,
go home sated and content,
reflecting on winners, and losers.
