Freshwater West Revisited
After six years this winter has not changed,
Encounter of sea and land, ellipses
Of force that intersect and flow boldly
Into and round each other as though
The air were party to either, socius
Only because savage both determine so.
This is no place of secondary forms,
Pretty distractions, heights of cliffs
Or trees, not far-out ships puffing
Irrelevantly of other shores and clashes.
Here the brute combers build the waterhead
And grass girds up the dunes the shock washes.
Away inland one can forget so much,
Ease the elliptical abrasions, bandage, duck,
Sidestep the bull-nosed rushes of a wrong
On right, proffer a parody to the back of it.
This cold October morning lays the action bare:
Sea is, and land, and bloodwreck where they meet.
