Long Weekend
Saturday fitting the new axe handle
hanging it back up in the shed
with the satisfaction that attends re-birth
.
Saturday evening dinner table North London
people I love
in places I do not understand.
Sunday morning driving home
pavements vomit-coated outside nightclubs
the coming rain will cleanse us all.
Sunday evening bus station
son with rucksack headed for Brighton
each farewell a little harder.
Monday fishing the silent
scream of a hooked trout
echoes my own un-shouted agony.
Monday evening a pint of Guinness
I left the pub with verses whirling
and a child swerved on an unseen bicycle.
I was nowhere near him
but thirty years ago that child was me
and I weep for all this lost time.
