The Day Before The A Level Results
Night falls late on clear days
even as the plates are cleared
there is still a faint hope in the west.
Lamb. The first this year
to be slaughtered and it fed us well
rare cooked, with the blood like wine.
My son did not eat with us
dreams and songs and dances held him
but I think of him as I scrape the plates.
There is a cleansing for this long birth;
blood of the lamb, fruit of the earth,
and his hopes washed away.
Lambs are a harvest, their bodies pack
the freezer with those of other years
but my son has tomorrow alone.
