The Morning News
The voice-over betrays the camera's lies,
the camera the words that would deceive.
Too easy to believe or to deride,
deny my crucial presence in the scene.
Although invisible, I play my part,
a shadow of a shadow in their dream,
without which nothing. They must touch my heart
to link my mind to move this piece across
their screen. I feel the mechanism start,
cold hand upon the centre of a loss
I cannot name. I feel them replicate
a hunger in me out of some remorse
archaic as my birth, to draw on hate
or love, whatever shaped my will to be
that keeps me captive in this human state,
holds me responsible for what I see,
my soul's defeat, their soulless victory.
