This Poor Art
This poor art of putting words on paper
requires minimal dexterity.
Sharp senses and a piquant memory
for images ephemeral as vapour –
these the necessary gifts, the raw
materials at anyone's command
who's literate. No palette, chisel, grand
piano; nothing hanging on the wall
as evidence of skill and work well done.
One picture's worth a thousand words,
they say. (They say in words.) It hurts
to think some think of this as pointless fun,
this mental crucifixion, blankly staring
into resurrection, so few caring.
