Sunflowers in June
with thumb and forefinger
I ease
the ten centimetre
sunflowers
from the fibre seed-tray,
set them in the raked bed.
their leaves droop
in the rain.
I stake them firmly
with green cane,
use plastic ties
that will not bruise the stems -
wind damage
is the most dangerous:
string lops off heads
as neatly as a sharp blade.
last year
the best they could do
was one bud
in late September.
(and dandelion and
field buttercup,
too many to dream of counting,
scatter the meadow
with gold down.)
