The Other
Adultery is a most conventional way to rise above the conventional. - Vladimir Nabokov |
Hardly a shadow from the sun tonight, Hardly a rumour. Bending your face right down to the hedgerow, You notice an out-burst of night-scented campion, So white and cool in the ebbing heat, And, tiny, fumbling stripe-winged moths Are moving about all over its petals Blurring their lace-work into its paleness. Look how they merge so perfectly For a hesitant moment after their flight, Drawn through the air by invisible sweetness, Then rising again too light for a breath. And I remember your breath on my skin, The shapes of the fragrance, your eloquent outline Almost unbelievingly. It is night again, All day the patterns have spun between us. Those sleepless, frail, insistent urges Link us finely whatever passes: Your edgy, lovely, star-proud grace, And I who have no right in this. |
