Without love
we would not sing facile pop songs to ourselves beside the photocopier
or laugh at inaudible jokes that have no structure and no punch line.
We would shake each other’s hands firmly and politely and pass on.
We would not steal clothing just to sniff at it like addicts of a Class A drug
or take bus journeys without books not caring where we ended up.
Without love we would not be exhausted by its persistent senseless
dreams,
but most of all, we would find other things to write about.
Kathryn Simmonds is 27 and just beginning to publish in magazines.
