Helen Kitson
Crippen's watch
I was a beautiful boy, an attentive son
after a new century and name.
We made Quebec but science
and suspicions caught up with us.
I escaped with a stain on my good name
and Hawley’s pocket watch.
I put it all behind me, married
and gave the watch to my unsuspecting husband.
He wears it always and has never guessed:
I’m good at covering things up,
I’d have made a better murderer
than poor dear Hawley.
Don’t imagine I don’t think about Cora,
chopped up and full of poison.
He did it for me and I turned a blind eye.
Every day I watch my husband winding up
my only souvenir of Hawley with fine
slender fingers; elegant, pale.
