it begins with the ankles
an in little more than an hour
the whole body is heavy, swollen
stretched out on an unforgiving bed
you look for signs of the waters receding
it is becoming critical and something must be done
the rain outside is like nothing that has
ever been seen
the landscape is awash, dissolving into night
this room is bleak
the arms that reach up from out of the darkness
snake across bare walls
arch over your head and menace
you fear their strength
the face is abandoned
eyes you still expect to open
the tongue is bloated
its movement involuntary against false teeth
that should have been removed
the silence bruises you
you peel dark wizened flesh
wine seeps
at centre, a stone, something to cut your teeth on.
