It Slips This Way And That
disappears around a corner:
thinking is shaped by the cracks
till it becomes a disregarding,
a familiarity breeding contempt.
I think I’ll walk in the road.
I’ll make the bastards drive on the pavement.
I have some say and the time to say it.
I’ll jump the spaces between white dashes
I’ll not overbalance in the blackness
the spumes of smoke and the roars of anger
of dragons at the edge of the world.
Then it will come like a bite of steel,
blades falling on dotted lines:
skinless in whiteness that swirls and dips,
till pieces settle in some sort of order.
The policeman did not like what he saw:
he reached for words like, caution, arrest,
that which is written is evidence against you,
the letter of the law, sentences . . .
A screaming of sirens, blue eyes flashing;
statements of consequence gouged in tarmac.
