Grandma and Grandpa Have a Row
7pm
Pipe askew, yorkshiring under his breath,
Grandpa mardies off, bootless, down the garden path -
Bananas, my foot he mithers,
ready to murder this year’s spuds.
8pm
Grandma, up to her wrists in soapy water,
murdering the pots, soul singing
Gotta wash that man right outta my hair -
a scene from Lady Macbeth, the Musical.
10pm
Grandpa, under moonlight, leaning on his spade
for support, thinking of crying;
this is their grandest row
since the beginning.
2am
Grandma appears, quietly pouring white
puddles at intervals along the garden path;
in a calm voice - Just taking plastercasts
of your footprints, in case you’re leaving.
9am
Grandma and Grandpa laughing over the soap
as they wash the muddy footprints
off the bedroom wall
next morning
