Dandelion
Her ‘76 was a golden viscous
yellow silk, a sweeter potence
from the rector’s lawn - stewed, fermented
and stored in the cedar shed.
He never went to church,
said God knew him on Juno Beach,
wasn’t calling no vicar Father, hated incense,
took off to the meadow with Blackie and a pack of Woodbines;
returned bearing more of the yellow heads.
After Eucharist, she always cooked the same stew for lunch -
dried minestrone as base, two legs of chicken from the Co’
four Brussels, Paxo, roasties and a sweet glass.
There is only the one bottle left now -
a dark green shell
cobwebbed to the bench -
she buys just the one leg.
Dandelion strengthens in the dark place,
love turned close to spirit.
