Politics in the Park
An exclamation mark on a soapbox,
frantic, gesticulating, betrothed
to language, he deplored
the paradox of slums and cripples
in a world of colours. And,
righteously, cursed Statesmen
by murder fed, by murder clothed.
There and then I determined
to join the money-box shuffling
party of exile from Yes-Man’s Land.
I cared, you see, I deeply cared.
Mesmerised by the theatre of his mouth,
I can’t recall what else he said.
I can’t recapture his North, his South,
and, somehow, I never did enrol.
But afterwards I felt so carefree,
so entranced, as I stared
at the highest, jubilant, silver
sunlit point of a fountain.
