Editorial
With this issue, we celebrate our first birthday. During the last year we have published over one hundred and twenty writers, both famous and obscure, and established ourselves as the voice of poetry in Bedfordshire and the neighbouring counties. We have ambitious plans for the next few months too. The first Bedford Open Poetry Competition has now been launched (see page 35), and winners will be published in the October 1997 issue of The Interpreter’s House.
We very much need a good literary magazine in the region. Our aim is to appear regularly, to deal with submissions quickly, to print a wide variety of excellent work and to showcase the best local poets and storytellers. I’ve said before that, other things being equal, writers from Bedfordshire/ Hertfordshire/ East Anglia/ East Midlands will get priority. But I’m also happy to accept good things from elsewhere.
Two more points for your attention. I try to fit in as many writers as possible, given our small size, and do not want the magazine to be dominated by a clique. So please, if you have already had work accepted, wait for a few months after it has appeared before trying again. Second, please renew your subscription if it is time, or consider taking one out. If enough people do so we shall be able to print a bigger magazine (i.e. publish more writers) and make other improvements, but it can’t be done without the support of our readers. I’ll do my part if you’ll do yours.
