Fable
Village outskirts, corn-stooks like shadow men
reminding him of a dream –
man in a grey overcoat, cupping an injured crow
in meaty hands. A stream
of voices in his head
How do I tell them, tell them?
First flakes. Corn-stook men,
his dream again,
fingers cupping tar feathers,
pale lips exhaling an ‘S’
the rest lost, breath making fog roses.
First flakes, itching beard’s stubble,
coughing once, he turned towards
the driveway.
And how do I tell them, tell them,
tell them…
Nearly over. A shadow man,
his knuckles rapped the door.
What have I come here for?
To tell them, tell them, tell them.
