An Owl Waits
I saw an owl once cresting.
He was still,
and then scanning with ocean eyes and perfect inflection.
He never seemed to make a response to the sound of his kingdom.
And his presence was a lighthouse amidst the stormy-summer froth
of life in bracken and hedgerow.
I could see the branch strangled beneath his talons,
and even the wind refused to bait his gaze from any direction save
one.
Wings preened like butcher’s knives so sharp they made no sound.
A cream shadow, it took flight; a portent of certainty in the wild.
