To the Bend in the Stream
A pathway of stones,
water flowing:
the plank bridge has stopped rattling
I am leaning over the stream's rush
(now and then water coagulates
into the quick flicks of fish) -
a clear flowing
visible to the stone:
I am watching down the stream,
rock bottom of this close valley
(its stony sides towering
its paddock harsh grass and clumped scrub) -
anything but gentle
the stream banks
are rock-sharp, and the leaning trees
close off the future at the first bend:
so see water under the bridge
more intently - shadow, sheen -
glimpses, fast forward.
