Crossing the Snow River
Through the relentless plain you go on
from black pine windbreak to the next,
with the rare tenderness of transplanted green
announcing the great crossings, a claim staked
drawing you there
to sit, down at the water's rush
absorbed, aware,
and soon green is a thin veneer
over bare sticks, a little answer
as you journey back
to the icy threads down mountainsides
now collected
into mortal coils glinting under light.
The truth of it is: the shingle lies,
unseen or seen, waiting. This life
of glacial sources in opaque veins
could turn monstrous, clouding in a thought.
The crossing is your event: the river is its own.
