Don't Ask About Love
(After Faiz Ahmed Faiz)
How can you say it could ever be the same?
When once the world shone because you lived.
Now dark waters churn in your wake, & I
Dredge the secrets of these sorrow filled days.
For you remain in that endless Springtime
Where nothing exists except in your sight.
I tried to cheat chance to keep you nine,
But some hopes life cuts short, some wishes
The world refuses to support. So I contend
Myself with other pleasures, pastimes apart
Skulking thru shadows of a war-born millennium.
Over threads of silk, satin, designer brocade
Soft bodies are bartered in the stock exchange,
Pig organs bar-coded, dressed in the flesh of men.
Bathed in sweat, step the living dead, blood lines
Mapping shipments of hidden cargoes -
In capital harbours to weeping sores; the drag
Of a bad habit holds my gaze like the pull of a
Promised FatherMotherNeverland.
Though you spark my heart with half a smile
Stoke my soul with a single glance, what can I do
When the Earth is screaming & I am slowly learning
There is more to living than loving you, my Love
So how can you say it could ever be the same?
