Dimítris Kalokýris (1948-)

Dimítris Kalokýris was born in Rethymnon, Crete.He studied modern Greek literature in Thessaloniki where he lived for fifteen years. He works in the field of graphic arts, designing book covers and posters, and illustrating children's books. In Thessaloniki, he founded and edited the literary magazine Tram (1971-1978), and in Athens he was the publisher of the literary and art magazine Hartis (1982-1987). He also acted as chief editor and artistic director of the cultural magazine To Tetarto (1985-1987) and later as director of publications for the Thessaloniki Cultural Capital of Europe. He has translated and illustrated Lucian's Verae Historiae, two selections of poems by Jacques Prévert, two theatrical works by Lorca, stories by Cortazar and six books by Jorge Luis Borges. His own works include the children's books, fiction and critical studies and the following collections of poetry: Heliads by the Sea (1967); The Afternoon (1969); The Bird and Other Wild Beasts (1972);The Coin or The Parable of the Moon (1973); The Fictitious Funnels (collected works 1977); The Suspended Beauty (1980); The Wharf (1984); The Evil Wind (1988); Colours of the Wet Animal (1990); The Argonaut Expedition (1996) and Vocabulary and Controversial Points from Twelve Ages (selected works, 1997). In 1996, he was awarded the State Short-Story Prize.
