Letter To Ex.
We ate your pet rabbits last night
the new girl and me.
A squaw with drawing pins
she stretched the pelts on an old door.
The girl and I – you would have said.
Rubbed in salt – explained the next stage,
fluttering hands like an Indian dancer.
They didn’t squeal as I’ve known them do before
accepting this new page turning the corner
this epiphany.
Oh – you’d say – just like the olden days.
Rabbits I guess would talk like this
and so did you
comfortable quilts of stifling clichés.
With some relish
we fed the still hot tripes to your poxy cat
then threw it out
hoping it might find its way
(though you said there wasn’t room)
to his new flat
carrying its luscious cargo
to bark it up on his ethnic mats.
The new girl – no clichés here
calls a spade a hole
talks meaty – even in this missionary position
drum stomached to stomach
replete with suddenly interesting sex
and succulent casserole.
