The Half Poem
He never wrote the half poem.
If you ask his mum –
parent behind with the rent
ritual sacrifice, part-time archivist –
she’ll tell you
he’s always been
wholly committed to the total form
and couldn’t be so clumsy or
reductionist.
But, whichever way you look at it,
there it is
on page six –
or is it seven as it isn’t numbered ?
An afterthought ?
A result of some slack-pawed
conspiracy between editor and printer
as lateral thinker ?
Or a slip that got stuck
to the underside of other things
not meant to be rejected
along with its other half –
the better part ?
Like the forgetfulness
of most rememberings
starting in the middle
beyond beginnings...........
