How do they do it daily?
Tied to the clock that locks
fast and slow grinds
as they leave their homes, loved
by the ones they leave.
The ticking wheel steers
routes, so deep gorged
by routine it’s all the same
car, train, bike, bus,
dash-board, wrist-watch,
slow train, Big Ben.
Late again.
To listen
to numbers
clocking
almost
backwards.
Until seven hours, eleven hours
three hundred and fifty million hours
have hauled over the hour-hand hurdle
and the five-thirty thrill of wheeling free
on a Friday evening flags the seconds to spill
to trip over their luminous legs
and unleash the payslip.
Only to clog
for the log-in
first thing
Monday
morning.
