Cleaning
Cleaning, I wipe away the layers of grey
that mask the bathroom window. Flowers
bloom on the pane as I polish
their glassy outlines glinting
with the colours of the outside world
an impressionist painting in the bizarre
shapes
of petals and leaves. Inside, the winter sun-
storm
scatters their bright shadows on the sill,
petals rosy yellow, black and white,
shadows edged with brilliant light.
I remember
someone told me once
about my shadow side.
Mine is you.
She said
to make the shadow shrink
I must turn from the dark
and face the sun.
So what can I do?
The sun is also you.
I turn to my flowers, bright shadows on the
sill
and I see. Like this glass, you refract in me.
I will learn to accept the shadow in the sun,
to shine out my darknesses and move on.
