Death was all around her
that November day.
The red rag she skidded past
was a fox,
flattened by tyres and urban pressure
“See no evil.”
Think positive thoughts, she admonished herself.
Mist shrouded the day in spectral
half-light limbo time.
As she drove back home from work.
And at home
the spider she had slippered yesterday
splattered the wall.
Her own fingers pointed at her.
The day hung on a cobweb
— a gossamer dream.
Waving away a mosquito, she’d kill it
on another day without a thought
— karma be damned — but not today.
If only time could roll back.
Her father’s heart had given way
that November day.
Death was all around her.
