A Room With a View
Around the hospital’s closed courtyard the lungi-clad man ran and ran, barefoot and with cleaver raised. Under a square sky the chased chicken ran helter-skelter and my eyes raced. Clutching veranda rails from the room in the typhoid ward, I dizzied seeing that desperate dance in the yard below — of headless bird, of headless hunter. The sedated sky held no escape as waves of horror swamped the room. Feeling the lime-washed walls, I stumbled back to the high bed in the middle of the room and clutched the starched stiff bed-clothes. The smell was antiseptic and strange, hospital-inhumane.
