Homecoming
The screaming engines die to a whistle fading stop.
At the open aircraft door,
I drink deep the exhilaration of cool air, and thoughts of home,
turning my face to greet spatters of rain,
soft, gentle for my return to the granite land.
The last few miles and Cam Brea is before me
rising dark and brooding
waiting and watchful for its wandering sons and daughters.
I am home.
To open arms, wide as the sands I run -
laughter and tumbling words hiding tears of love.
Later, much later, I slip into a familiar pit of softness,
cocooned in flannelette sheets,
childhood held in their sea-wind freshness
rough from many washings.
Hard slatted bed and suffocating heat of the tropics melts away
in dreams of pounding surf and the skylark’s trembling welcome.
