They appear overnight.
An island of stones, nettles, cans
encircled by a metal fence.
Official signs warn ‘Hardhat Area’.
Commuters at traffic lights give them a glance.
Colleagues might mention them over monitors.
Something about them was probably buried
in the pages nobody reads.
Transistors blare at the curious.
Workmen disappear into chemical toilets.
Men with clipboards scatter seagulls.
Breeze-blocks become walls.
CCTV is installed.
Maximum security glazing
shines back the sky.
The basement windows are black.
Nobody knows anyone who works there
or what goes on inside.
