Before nightfall...
spread the net over the pond, defend the darting fish against
the dawn
when heron may stalk: a grey-robed priest who comes to
steal golden tribute.
Shut the cats in; they will settle into curled comfort, nose to
tail,
and will not grieve the taste of shadow, the tang of scurrying
prey.
Walk the dog on a leash, controlled and commanded. It
does not need
to learn how to raise its long muzzle and howl at the curious
stars.
Close the drapes, lock the doors, leave no corner unlit by
lamp or candle.
Don’t let the moon shine on your bed, take a pill to defeat
dreaming. Sleep.
