The prophecies were wrong. Translation had corrupted
The scriptures. Bedlam! All the barbershops erupted
With loud recriminations and I-told-you-so’s.
Some walked out unshaven. A draughts match came to blows.
Those who had waited in the mountains for the rain
Of fire returned to their apartments. Inhumane
Expressions were contorting even pretty lips:
For no one can abide a late Apocalypse.
When prophets fail the most effective thing to do
Is find a scapegoat. Though it makes no difference who
Gets picked, he has to be thought evil, not a martyr—
Beyond the pale, persona non cocksucking grata!
