The Abbé reflects
His body fell in my lap like ripe fruit
and I took him. He was sweet
with the pent-up mead of summer
gone on too long. Undercover
I parted his mouth. The first kiss is the best;
it’s the sole truth-taste, test
of spirit made flesh.
Afterwards I wished
I had left him alone. Ripeness
is all very well. But in such cases
there are consequences
inconsistent with desire. Alas—
I do not know how to live
after devastation, after love.
