Letters to the Editor
A Devoted Servant of Poetry
Sir,
The death has occured suddenly in London (his body was cremated on Monday, March 5th, at Golders Green) of Henry Keith Grant, an original member of The Poetry Society and actively associated with its first Centre (Hampstead) from its formation in 1909, and latterly a representative of this faithful group on the General Council of the Society. Since his retirement from the Foreign Securities Department of the Customs and Excise, for which he was particularly fitted by his wide linguistic skill, Mr. Grant has acted as honorary librarian of The Poetry Society, finding an outlet for his life-long bookishness and devotion to poetry in classifying and cataloguing and administering the use of the extensive accumulation of volumes at 33 Portman Square. With quiet enthusiasm and great assiduity he devoted himself to the many claims of his congenial duties for which he had received early training as librarian of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society. For such as he the Poetry Society was constituted—in membership and service he found great pleasure, comfort, satisfaction and fellowship.
Henry Keith Grant was the son of David Grant, A.C.P., F.E.I.S., one time a master at Oundle and vice-principal of Eccelsall College, Sheffield, who is still remembered as “the Aberdeenshire poet”, greatly admired by Lewis Spence and other leaders of the Scotch Renaissance. His Lays and Legends of the North have gone through many editions in many forms.
I am, etc.,
GALLOWAY KYLE.
