Yánnis Patílis was born in Athens. A graduate of Law and the Philosophy School at the University of Athens, he is now a literature teacher in secondary education in Athens. Having established himself as one of the eminent poets of his generation, he has also distinguished himself - since the beginning of the 1980s - as a significant critical voice on the overall state of Greek letters. Between the years 1983-85, he was the co-founder and co-editor of the poetry and music journal Nesos (Island) and of the critical journal Kritiki ke Keimena (Critique and Texts). Since 1986, having combined all his interests, he is the editor and publisher of Planodion, a prominent journal of literature and the politics of culture. He has published the following volumes of poetry: The Little Guy and the Beast (1970); But Now Be Careful... (1973); In Favour of Fruition (1977); Tokens (1980); Non-smoker in the Land of Smokers (1982) [collection of previous volumes]; Warm Midday (1984); The Scribe's Mirror (1989) and Voyages in the Same City (1994) [Collected Poems]. His work has been translated into various languages, notably English, French, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, Bulgarian,and Serbo-Croatian.
