Evening Prayer
The bleak river, large and melancholy
affronts the many water birds;
they shrink like small idolators
before sad icons.
A rough wind stings the late air
with a sharp tang.
Fishermen rub shoulders
with the inclement weather, pursue
their solitary trade in a wilderness world,
standing like monks bereft of prayer.
Time stands still.
I probe the edgy shallows of memory
tokens of recall and loss,
sifting faded pages yellowed
and blemished with blurred images.
I wait for answered prayer
but western clouds shut out
the phantom signs and darkness
blanks the press of dreams.
