Darkness you can bite
lit by bright strip cartoons
with violent endings.
The only place to see
men curtsey. Others, intent
on more ordinary tasks,
clamber ladders with hammers
that defy Silence Please
in three languages, almost
the same. Not for show,
I suppose, a man in linen
suit comes from his lunch
and mumbles, unobserved
except by me. It’s hard to pray
on your knees in a dingy
building-site, but he does.
I hide my book which is not
a bible. He’s oblivious
to haloes of flashlight
erupting behind his head.
Snapshots. No worse, perhaps, than me
sheltering from the rain.
