Sight Lines
The light is clear here.
Some things can be seen more distinctly.
The island, for example, its beach exposed by the tide,
its house where sisters used to live.
Such things are close, explicable,
their meanings laid out on the foreshore
for gulls to pick.
Other directions are not so lucid;
futures, certainly, but also pasts.
Today seems fixed like the beacon on the lifeboat station
but this may be a trick of the light.
Already yesterday has cloned shadows of itself
each insisting on solidity.
Sunlight dances on the sea like a circus of promises.
Do not believe it.
