Streets of Parrots 1930
Since Marco Polo
travelled the ancient silk routes
and for centuries before
parrots were picked
as if they were flowers in a tropical garden
placed in honey coloured bamboo palanquins
and transported like queens
to reach at last
the street of parrots
in Alexandria
To hoot and whistle
cluck and sing
clothed brilliantly as a renaissance court
but not to speak
for speech they say
is learned only from a longtime friend.
