A Vase of Flowers
She came home determined to leave him.
He was going to mutilate the garden once again,
Chop back the bushes, pull up her plants.
Besides he gave her no space;
She spent most of the day out of the house
To avoid him.
She imagined life on her own, a room of her own.
But she was greeted by
A vase of buddleia,
Its tawny spears standing in a fan,
Its leaves round the lip like a beak,
An eagle caught in slow motion
Holding its wings high
Rearing back to strike its scent at the hall.
He had thrust them in the old cut glass
Haphazard and had made a poem,
So suddenly she was surprised by beauty.
It was a wonder he had done it,
The hard man, the eagle man,
A man always doing things, so he found it difficult
To give her dreams peace;
She swore she wouldn’t leave him, not just yet.
