Bells in the evening
Remembering that we used to ring
church bells in an earlier, happier life,
my daughter rang me from her London flat,
holding the telephone at the open window.
Westminster Abbey ringers on their practice night.
Ten bells expertly rung, their peculiar music
deep-throated, sonorous, a waterfall.
A very English sound, not for John Knox.
Could the austerity of Scottish kirks
tolerate such an extravagant
outburst of sound on the still evening air?
