Chestnut tree
In Africa - there is a saying
that when an old person dies
it is, as if
a whole library burns down.
Instead of speech
you tug the rigging of your hair
trying to remember your grandson’s name;
accept me as a nice lady
who visits twice a week.
Today you tell me
how lovely the candle-blooms
on the chestnut trees are
over and over and over again.
From your window
I see a thin muslin sky,
watch grey clouds fading;
we sit in silence
as I count the white flames
on the tree.
There are still so many things
I want to know.
