The End Of The Season
The fairground’s closed now: summer’s over,
the rides all locked away, the ice-cream
cabin hidden beneath tarpaulin until next year;
and when the children return, it won’t be
for rides, ice-cream, and the helter-skelter.
They’ll yearn for different games
and other company.
The wooden benches along the prom
where the old people sat and watched the sea
are deserted now. An old man
walking his dog, an elderly couple
sitting in a shelter, and me.
How many of the same will return next summer
and how many will be at one
with the calm tranquillity that
all summer long they sat and gazed upon.
