Gite
Like a shuttered vicarage
Out of place in England.
Though not so here.
Flies and oilclothed table
Filtered by the fading light
Moving weakly on the cross-cracked panes
As the feeble breeze shifts the ivy past the glass.
*
And the black flies that buzz the Kitchen cloth
Are killed - like flies.
*
She waits. They wait - cleaning with apprehension -
For Their arrival: with apprehension.
*
Eventually - after some food - and wine
Yes, wine, - a car horns away the ivy-tapping silence.
Apprehension is shrouded by pleasure. There seems no menace
As the glass door is opened and Their jollity approaches.
*
But the future is different.
