In modern times
It's
seven in the morning,
or just after lunch,
or perhaps near that
time when the moon
perches atop that
old hickory in my yard.
It does not matter much,
but that I am wide awake
with this television on.
There is yet another
bulletin on the crawler,
a news alert, some
information which has
arrived through thin air.
There may be more
agents of destruction.
A bomb which has
collapsed the night
upon the sleeping.
The latest definition
of the word jihad.
So I feel compelled
to attend, my eyes
screwed to the news.
And I come to sleeping
slowly and jolted,
as if the wheels of my
slumber are on the rims.
For I am not fearful
of what I might
see or hear, only
what might escape me
should I stop to eat
or close both of my
eyes at one time.
